The Impact of Adult Entertainment on the U.S. Economy (Infographic)
The entertainment industry generates big bucks for our economy, so we werent surprised to learn that one of its main sectors, adult entertainment, also fares pretty well in terms of revenue. In fact, adult entertainment is a $13 billion dollar business in the United States. Quadruple that figure and you have how much money adult movies, magazines, downloads and novelties earn worldwide.
The adult entertainment industry churns out content, too. Approximately 11,000 films are produced annually, which is 20 times the number of movies produced and released by Hollywood in any given year.
How Adult Entertainment is Consumed
Most people consume adult entertainment in the form of DVDs, but the internet is a close second, with $3.6 and $2.8 billion in annual sales respectively. Hotel room/Cable/PPV and mobile sales comprise $2.2 billion a year (although we expect to see mobile consumption soar in coming years), clubs see $2 billion in business annually, with novelties ($1.7 billion) and magazines (nearly a billion) coming in last.
Which States Watch Adult Entertainment the Most
So who is consuming all of this content? Well, one study indicated that Utah, Florida and Alaska are the top three states with the most subscriptions to adult entertainment websites. California, which actually produces most of the adult content available in the United States did not make the list, but the state is paid $36 million a year in taxes from the adult entertainment industry.
How Much Adult Entertainment Professionals Earn
Unfortunately, the trickle-down effect doesnt apply to the actors and actresses in this industry. Men make anywhere from $300-$400 a scene and women earn more, but certainly not enough at $1,500 a scene. Keep in mind that these figures are just averages. Salaries can be much more or less.
